Music / VOCAL / Night Day Sea

night day sea

for treble voices, SAB choir and piano

Night Day Sea was commissioned by KMEIA as part of the 2018 Kodaly National Conference in Perth, Australia. It was premiered by the combined conference choir, conducted by Celia Christmass at Presbyterian Ladies College, 4 October 2018. I wrote these program notes for the conference:

Night Day Sea is an evocative exploration of the vibrancy and innocence of youth set against the wisdom of adulthood. The text by West Australian poet Roland Leach is alight with colour, calling to mind imagery of children who “dance their day” in “yellow and green”, contrasted with the “do-less greys” of adulthood. This is reflected in the interplay between the children’s choir and the older voices present in the work. Set alongside this is an exploration of the imagery night vs day. We begin the piece in the first light of daybreak, as birds begin to awaken. 􏰀The piece travels through the tumultuous events of the day and lands just as the sunset haze settles into dusk.

Here’s a picture of me at the conference with conductor Celia Christmass, an ex-teacher and now wonderful friend of mine.
