Firefly

for trumpet and electronics

I wrote the first version of this work for Fletcher Cox for my final recital at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2015. Later, I had the idea of adapting the work for a more immersive electronic experience, featuring live delays and spatial diffusion. The trumpet player is encouraged to explore the possibilities of interaction with the electronics. There are times at which the solo voice can be quite distinct and other times that it is intended to be lost in the murkiness of the polyphony. Toward the end of the piece, the solo voice becomes lost in the cloud of voices, as if in a swarm of fireflies.
