Cloudscapes

for brass quintet

This work was commissioned by my friends at Golden Gate Brass, a quintet formed at The Australian National Academy of Music. They asked me to write something that ‘didn’t sound like regular brass repertoire’, a delightfully vague challenge that I accepted with gusto. The piece I eventually came up with rests on blurred, shifting textures in multiple temporalities. It asks the players to play in a sweet and lyrical manner. I also endeavoured to give each of them a nice solo.

Golden Gate Brass premiered Cloudscapes at St Luke’s Church, Melbourne in December 2018.
